 1.FBI chief to visit India days after US flagged foiled plot to murder Khalistani terrorist Pannun:The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Christopher Wray is scheduled to visit India next week, confirmed the U.S. ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, at an event in Delhi on Thursday. His visit came days after Washington accused an Indian government official of planning the assassination of Khalistani terrorist, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, on American soil. During the FBI chief's visit, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) is likely to take up the issue of Khalistani terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun with the visiting US official, reported news agency ANI citing sources.

2.More than 250 environmental and community groups on Thursday called on the administration of U.S. President Joe Biden to halt its support for liquefied natural gas (LNG) due to the super-cooled fuel's contribution to climate change.The groups, led by Friends of the Earth, released a letter to Mr. Biden at the COP28 United Nations climate summit in Dubai, where dozens of nations are pushing for a global agreement to phase out use of CO2-emitting fossil fuels like LNG.

4.Centre’s efforts helped country to achieve highest economic growth rate: Nirmala Sitharaman:Replying to a three-day debate on the state of the country’s economy in Rajya Sabha on December 7, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman countered the charges of the Opposition and said the Centre has addressed issues of inflation, unemployment, and inequality. Ms. Sitharaman said India registered the highest growth rate in the world in the second quarter of this financial year.In her 90-minute reply, she said the second-quarter growth was very high, it is the highest globally and the country is now the second most sought-after manufacturing destination in the world. “We continuously maintain that momentum of being the fastest-growing economy,” Ms. Sitharaman said. She added that all sectors of the economy are growing significantly.

5.Digital economy to contribute 20% of GDP by 2026: Rajeev Chandrasekhar:Union minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Thursday said that the digital economy will contribute 20 per cent of India's gross domestic product (GDP) by 2026.The Union minister of state for electronics and information technology, skill development and entrepreneurship was speaking at the inaugural function of Startup Conclave 2023', organised by the Gujarat government at helipad ground in the state capital. In 2014, the digital economy was around 4.5 per cent of the GDP and today it is 11 per cent. By 2026, digital economy will account for 20 per cent or one-fifth of the Indian GDP, he said.

6.Chennai rain: Schools, colleges shut today after floods caused by Cyclone Michaung; IMD predicts more showers:According to IMD, light to moderate rainfall is likely across Kerala, Mahe, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal and Lakshadweep in the next few days. Schools and colleges in Chennai district will remain closed on Friday (December 8) due to relief work in areas adversely affected by the rain, the Tamil Nadu government announced. heavy rainfall caused by Cyclone Michaung in the last few days. At least 20 people have been killed in rain-related incidents in the city.

7.State implements new examination criteria for admission in classes 6 and 9: The state government on Thursday released a government resolution (GR) stating the revised admission criteria for students seeking entry into classes 6 and 9. According to the GR, students now need to clear 50-mark and 60-mark examinations in Classes 5 and 8, respectively, to be eligible for admission in higher grades. The decision, introduced in June by the school education department, marks an amendment to the Right to Education (RTE) Act. The amendment mandates the conduct of examinations for students in Classes 5 and 8, a departure from the previous RTE Act that ensured students from Classes 1 to 8 did not face the possibility of failure.

8.India’s AI regulations will allow room for innovation, but with eye on safety, says top govt. official:Despite recognizing key challenges to be resolved in the evolution of AI in India, the Union government sees AI as a sector where “the positives outweigh the negatives", S. Krishnan, secretary, ministry of electronics and IT (Meity), said on Thursday addressing the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII)’s Global Economic Policy Forum. He quoted Gita Gopinath, former managing director of IMF, as saying recently that AI can trigger an increase in productivity and economic change similar to what was seen during the industrial revolution.

9.Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad to soon get direct flights to Medina-MUMBAI: Pilgrims travelling to Medina can soon take direct flights from Mumbai, Delhi and Hyderabad. So far, pilgrims travelling from Mumbai to Medina have had to book flights to Jeddah and then travel onwards by road and trains. Those who still opt to fly to Jeddah from Mumbai can take trains to Medina or Mecca through an integrated service between Saudi Airlines and Haramain High Speed Railway, said Saudi Tourism Authority on Wednesday at a “roadshow” in Mumbai of Nusuk, an electronic platform that provides services like e-visa, hotel bookings, and travels to Mecca, Medina and other historic sites.- Timesindia.com

11.India on course to become 5th-largest market for travel and tourism.-India is poised to become the next big travel market in the world, projected to hit the fifth rank in outbound travel with spends of $89 billion in 2027 as compared with the current 10th position with $38 billion in 2019.The projections are in a report by Bernstein that tries to identify the potential big markets for travel.In terms of tourist inflows, India is projected to become the third largest domestic market by 2027 with spends of $174 billion, up from the $127 billion spent in 2019 when it was in fifth place.
