1.The European Union has set out a plan to upgrade its strategic ties with India, even as it warned that India’s military exercises with Russia and its purchase of Russian oil are risks to the growing strategic ties between Brussels and New Delhi. The European Commission and the EU’s top diplomat Kaja Kallas released ‘A New Strategic EU-India Agenda’ on Wednesday (September 17, 2025) in Brussels, and urged the European Parliament and Council (i.e., the heads of member states) to adopt it.

3.The Union Finance Ministry has notified new Central GST (CGST) tax rates for goods, which will be effective from September 22, 2025. Under GST, the revenues are shared equally between the Centre and the States. A 40% tax will be levied on ultra luxury items, while tobacco and related products will continue to be in the 28% plus Cess category.Currently, Goods and Services Tax (GST) is levied in four slabs of 5, 12, 18 and 28%. Besides, a compensation cess is levied on luxury items and demerit or sin goods.

4.Discussions between the negotiating teams of the U.S. and India on Tuesday (September 16, 2025) in New Delhi were “positive and forward looking”, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said following the talks. It added that the two sides had decided to “intensify efforts” towards an early conclusion of a trade agreement between the two countries.
