1.Starting August 1, Russia has started issuing electronic visa (e-visa) to Indian passport holders that helps visitors get travel approval faster for diverse purposes such as business trips, guest visits, and tourism. The e-visa can be used just like any other regular visa, eliminating the need to check with embassies or any other associations.
2.Myanmar's ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi has been pardoned in five criminal cases in a junta amnesty and was moved from jail to house arrest, WION quoted state media reports on 1 August. As per a junta spokesperson, the popular Myanmar ousted leader's sentence has been reduced by six years in total. She was arrested two years ago in a daytime coup, following which a military junta took over the reins of Myanmar.
3.Chinese state media reported that 11 people have died and 27 are missing amid flooding in the capital Beijing as heavy rainfall prompted authorities to close train stations and evacuate people. The level of rainfall is highly unusual for Beijing in the wake of Typhoon Doksuri and flooding in other parts of northern China was also witnessed. These places rarely see such large amounts of rain.
4.In a recorded video statement, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar said gasoline, or petrol, prices would be raised by 19.95 Pakistani rupees to 272.95 Pakistani rupees ($0.952) per litre and diesel by 19.90 rupees to 273.40 rupees per litre, an increase of 7.8% for both fuels.Fuel prices have increased sharply in global markets in the last 15 days, Dar said, adding his government had tried to minimise the hike. 5.The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) has announced that health research in the UAE is growing at a rate three times faster than the global average. 6.The Centre on Tuesday introduced the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023 amid the din in Lok Sabha.The Bill was introduced by Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai even as several Opposition parties opposed it. 7.Mumbai: Maharashtra fares better than most Indian states at deploying early warning systems (EWS) in response to floods and cyclones, according to a new report. With regard to floods, Maharashtra ranked eighth out of India’s 32 states, with ‘moderate’ exposure to floods, based on the frequency and intensity of extreme events vis-a-viz the state’s population, according to the report titled Strengthening India’s Disaster Preparedness with Technology: A Case for Effective Early Warning Systems by the Delhi-based non-profit Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW).
