1.US climate envoy says COP28 'last' chance to keep 1.5C target alive: US envoy John Kerry warned Tuesday that the UN's COP28 climate summit in Dubai was the world's "last" chance to keep its target for limiting global warming alive. Kerry issued his warning hours after COP28 president Sultan Al Jaber proposed a draft deal that did not include a phase-out of fossil fuels, disappointing the United States, the European Union and low-lying islands most vulnerable to climate change. "Many of us have called for the world to largely phase out fossil fuels," Kerry told ministers.He added: "I think most of you here refuse to be part of a charade."

4.Draft of climate pact waters down ‘phase out’ of fossil fuel, seeks “rapid” decline in coal use.:After a week of expectations that negotiators at the ongoing climate talks in Dubai might agree to a ‘phase out’ of fossil fuel, the phrase has been edited out, according to the latest draft made public late evening. However there’s stronger language against coal with a recommendation to “rapidly phase down unabated coal,” that countries such as India, Indonesia and China – major consumers of coal power and developing countries at that – could find objectionable.

5.Earthquake today: 5.2 magnitude quake hits Afghanistan: An earthquake of 5.2 magnitude on the Ritcher scale has hit Afghanistan, as per the National Center for Seismology. Earlier in October, a powerful magnitude-6.3 earthquake followed by strong aftershocks killed hundreds of people in western Afghanistan, the country's national disaster authority said as reported by the Associated Press. More than 2,000 people were killed and over 9,000 injured, the Taliban administration said, in the deadliest tremors to rock the quake-prone mountainous country in years.

6.Supreme Court verdict on Article 370 abrogation: The Supreme Court on Monday unanimously upheld the Centre government's decision of August 2019 to abrogate Article 370, which bestowed a special status on the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir. "International law doesn't recognise India's unilateral and illegal actions of 5 August 2019. The judicial endorsement by the Indian Supreme Court has no legal value. Kashmiris have an inalienable right to self-determination in accordance with the relevant UN SC resolutions," caretaker Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani said.-
