1.India declares state mourning on death of Kuwait’s Amir:The Indian government on Sunday conveyed its deepest condolences to Kuwait on the death of its Amir, Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, and declared state mourning across the country on December 17 as a mark of respect. Sheikh Nawaf died on Saturday at the age of 86, according to the royal court, just a little more than three years after assuming power in the West Asian country. The cause of his death was not immediately disclosed. The Amir was admitted to hospital in November due to an emergency health problem.

3.Modi in Varanasi Day 2: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a two-day visit to his Lok Sabha constituency Varanasi. On the first day, he launched a slew of development and infrastructure projects in the city including the launch of the Kanyakumari-Varanasi Tamil Sangamam train and multi-language and braille translations of Thirukkural, Manimekalai and other classic Tamil literature. The Prime Minister also participated in the Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra and took a walkthrough of the stall and visited the Viksit Bharat Yatra Van and Quiz event where he interacted with beneficiaries of various government schemes.

4.Govt likely to table Telecommunications Bill 2023 in Lok Sabha today:The government is likely to table the Telecommunications Bill 2023 in Lok Sabha on Monday, according to sources. The Telecommunications Bill 2023 aims to replace the 138-year-old Indian Telegraph Act that governs the telecom sector. "The President has been informed about the Telecommunications Bill 2023. It is likely to be introduced in Lok Sabha on Monday, December 18," a source told PTI. The Cabinet had cleared the bill in August.The draft Telecommunications Bill released in 2023 had proposed to bring over-the-top or internet-based calling and messaging apps under the definition of telecommunications to enhance users' safety.

5.COVID subvariant JN.1 in Kerala raises concerns; expert says 'markedly different from prior versions...'With the COVID subvariant JN.1 detected in Kerala, triggering concerns about its impact in the southern state. First detected in the United States in September 2023, the JN.1 variant is a descendant of BA.2.86. Official sources told news agency PTI, “A case of COVID-19 sub-variant JN.1 was detected in Kerala on December 8." As per the sources, the sample from a 79-year-old woman had returned a positive result in an RT-PCR test on November 18, adding that she had mild symptoms of influenza-like illnesses (ILI) and had recovered from COVID-19.

6.Ambuja Cements to invest ₹6,000 crore in Green Power; targets capacity of 1,000 mw:Ambuja Cements, the Adani Group cement and building material company, has committed a significant investment of ₹6,000 crore in renewable power projects, targeting a capacity of 1,000 MW. The investment encompasses a diverse portfolio of solar and wind power projects strategically positioned across Gujarat and Rajasthan. The lineup includes a 600 MW Solar Power project and 150 MW Wind Power project in Gujarat and a 250 MW Solar Power project in Rajasthan, Ambuja Cements said in a regulatory filing on Monday.

7.Chennai Weather Live Updates: Heavy rains lashes Tamil Nadu; School colleges shut today: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall over Tamil Nadu and Kerala during the next 2-3 days. As per IMD Chennai, heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur at one or two places over Toothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Pudukkottai, and Sivaganga districts of Tamil Nadu while heavy rain is likely to occur at one or two places over Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Madurai, Mayiladuthurai, Tenkasi, Virudhunagar districts of Tamil Nadu and Karaikal area.

8.Fresh snowfall blankets Jammu and Kashmir's Gulmarg on Sunday:Gulmarg witnessed fresh snowfall due to a feeble western disturbance that hit the region on Saturday. Snowfall was also witnessed in Sonamarg & on Zojila axis. People seen walking through snow covered roads in Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday. The Gulmarg ski resort in north Kashmir's Baramulla district registered a low temperature of minus 2.8 degrees Celsius, compared to the previous night's minus 3.4 degrees Celsius. The current temperature at the resort is 1.4 degrees Celsius above the normal range.(ANI)
