2.France, Germany to fund India's urban infra mission:France’s development agency AFD and Germany’s KfW Bank are in talks with India to provide €100 million loan to fund the country's urban infrastructure plan, AMRUT mission, according to persons aware of the matter. Negotiations on the loan are set for early 2024 with the signing expected in February. This follows the countries' recent collaboration on the City Investments to Innovate, Integrate and Sustain or CITIIS 2.0 program, a four-year initiative focused on urban renewal and sustainable waste management, to which they contributed €100 million each.

3.Indian Embassy in Japan sets up emergency control room after earthquake, tsunami hit island nation.:In response to the devastating earthquake and subsequent tsunami that struck north-central Japan earlier today, the Indian Embassy has established an emergency control room to provide assistance and support to those affected. The 7.6 magnitude earthquake has triggered urgent evacuation alerts in various coastal areas of Japan and in order to aid Indian nationals in distress, the embassy enlisted numbers and email IDs in an update on their X handle.

4.After US, India second country to send dedicated satellite to study black holes- Isro ushered in the New Year with the successful launch of XPoSat (X-ray Polarimeter Satellite), India's first satellite to conduct research on black holes and other celestial objects.Workhorse PSLV placed the satellite on its 60th flight in a 650km orbit. The final stage of PSLV-C58 then turned into an orbital experimental module (POEM) to test the 10 payloads over the next month.

5.Jaishankar to begin two-day visit to Nepal on January 4, power pacts on agenda:An agreement on the modalities of purchasing 10,000 MW of hydropower from Nepal and discussions on air connectivity issues, digital payments, and the inauguration of development projects funded by India are all on the agenda as External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar heads to Kathmandu for a two-day visit on January 4 and 5. The visit to Nepal, the first foreign policy foray by the government in 2024, is long overdue, as the Joint Commission Meeting, to be held between Mr. Jaishankar and Nepali Foreign Minister N.P. Saud, has been pending for several months. The last meeting was held in January 2021.

6.Printing 'date of manufacturing', 'unit sale price' on packaged items becomes mandatory from January 1:Printing the 'date of manufacturing' and 'unit sale price' has become mandatory on all packaged commodities effective from January 1, according to Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh.Earlier, companies were given the option to either print the 'date of manufacturing' or 'date of import' or date of packaging on the packaged commodities.

7.Truck drivers protest against new provisition under hit and run.-Truckers, taxi and bus operators have started a nation-wide strike to oppose the provision of ₹7 lakh penalty and 10-year jail term for hit-and-run cases under the newly-passed Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The All India Motor Transport Congress says these provisions which have yet to come in force can lead to undue harassment, and must be recalled.

8.Higher education institutions to get dedicated internship cells under NEP:As internships are made compulsory for Under-Graduate (UG) as well as Post-Graduate (PG) students, under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020; all colleges and universities in Maharashtra will now need to have a dedicated Internship Cell. The Higher and technical education department of the state for the first time has designed and released an Internship Policy for all Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), in line with NEP 2020.

9.Inauguration of Ayodhya airport and infrastructure projects worth Rs 15,700 crore accelerate the hotel industry in UP: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Ayodhya where he inaugurated the redeveloped Ayodhya Dham railway station and the newly-constructed Maharishi Valmiki International Airport.The visit came ahead of the consecration of the Ram temple on January 22, 2024. PM Modi laid the foundation stone of multiple development projects worth more than Rs 15,700 crore in the state. These include projects worth about Rs 11,100 crore for the development of Ayodhya and its surrounding areas and projects worth about Rs 4,600 crore related to other projects across Uttar Pradesh.

10.Unorganised sector - Reason behind more authority for FSSAI:The Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, is a landmark legislation in India that aims to consolidate the laws relating to food and to establish the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) for laying down science-based standards for articles of food and to regulate their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale, and import to ensure the availability of safe and wholesome food for human consumption. The Act was enacted by Parliament of India on  August 23, 2006, and was brought into force on August 5, 2007.
