 1.The US Senate on Friday passed legislation that would give President Donald Trump the power to impose tariffs of up to 100 per cent on countries that are major buyers of Russian oil and gas, putting India among those at risk of fresh trade penalties.The Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026 passed 86-11 and now heads to the House of Representatives. The tariffs would not take effect automatically.

4.The Jharkhand government on Sunday (August 9, 2026) agreed to cancel the 14th Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) preliminary examination and the JPSC backlog examinations held in 2023 and 2025 following six hours of discussions with protesting student groups. However, the students remained firm on their demand for a CBI probe into the alleged irregularities in the JSSC-CGL examination and said the agitation would continue, including a march to the Jharkhand Assembly on Monday (August 10, 2026).

5.Enforcement actions by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) revealed that nearly one in every five food samples tested across the country during the 2025–26 financial year failed to meet safety and quality standards.According to statutory data provided by the food regulator, out of 2,23,808 food samples analysed in FY 2025–26, a total of 40,023 were declared “non-conforming”, comprising 9,086 unsafe samples, 26,754 substandard samples, and 4,225 samples with labelling defects, misleading claims, or miscellaneous infractions.
