 1.US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have a “very good working relationship” and will resolve differences over Washington’s threatened tariffs on countries buying Russian oil, White House Trade Adviser Peter Navarro said on Tuesday. Navarro’s comments came days after the US Senate passed a bipartisan bill that could allow Trump to impose tariffs of up to 100% on goods from major purchasers of Russian oil and gas including India.

2.President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday gave assent to the Vande Mataram Bill, granting the National Song the same legal protection as the national anthem. The Parliament passed the Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026, last month, amending the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971. The legislation seeks to give Vande Mataram the same statutory protection as the national anthem, Jana Gana Mana.With the president's assent, the bill has become a law. Now, such offences are punishable with imprisonment up to three years, a fine, or both.

3.The Tamil Nadu Assembly on Tuesday (August 11, 2026) unanimously adopted a resolution urging the Union government to do away with the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) for admission to undergraduate medical courses, citing repeated irregularities in the conduct of the examination, proliferation of coaching centres, and loss of lives. The lone BJP MLA M. Bhojarajan opposed the resolution and staged a walkout before the voting.

4.The Maharashtra government will prepare a standard operating procedure (SOP) to prevent examination paper leaks in universities. The SOP will be prepared based on guidelines issued by the central government, higher and technical education minister Chandrakant Patil said on Tuesday. The minister also directed the department to prepare clear rules to prevent paper leaks and issue a circular fixing responsibility on officials and employees if any lapse occurs.

5.The Maharashtra food safety regulator has suspended the food licence of Blink Commerce Private Limited, the entity operating quick-commerce platform BlinkIt, for its Malad West dark store.The licence was suspended after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found heavy cockroach infestation, expired food stock and multiple hygiene violations during an inspection. The food safety agency also raided the Reliance store in Buldhana district after a complaint mentioned live insects in kaju katli.
