1.80th Independence Day Highlights: The nation commemorated the 80th Independence Day on August 15, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi leading the celebrations at the Red Fort complex here amid patriotic fervour and multi-layer security.For the first time, the national song, 'Vande Mataram', was rendered during the celebrations at the Red Fort.An Army band played the tune of 'Vande Mataram' as the guests present on the occasion sang the national song. This was followed by the prime minister hoisting the national flag, and then the National Anthem was recited.

2.The 2026 Monsoon Session of the Parliament which commenced on July 20 and culminated on Thursday (August 13) witnessed the passing of 12 Bills wherein majority of them were passed without much debate. 11 Bills were introduced in the Lok Sabha while 2 Bills were introduced in Rajya Sabha– The Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026 The Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development (Amendment) Bill, 2026; both houses passed a total of 12 Bills. Meanwhile one Bill, The Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026 was referred to the joint committee of both houses. As of August 14, the President of India gave her assent to 14 Bills which are now laws.

3.India has set a maximum daily cooking gas production target of 63,810 metric tons for state-run and private refineries to ensure domestic supplies and build buffers after U.S.-Israeli war against Iran disrupted supplies of the essential fuel, according to an August 13 government order.

4.The Gujarat government is likely to announce a new hotel and tourism policy by August end. Tax concessions, higher FSI and faster approvals are all on the table, aimed at pulling investment into the hospitality sector. The policy won’t focus only on Ahmedabad and other major cities. Smaller cities and towns are part of the plan too, where the government wants more hotel rooms built ahead of the 2030 Commonwealth Games.

5.Taj Hotels has been ranked the world’s strongest luxury hotel brand, while Hilton has emerged as the most valuable luxury hotel brand globally, according to Brand Finance’s Hotels 50 2026 report.Brand Finance’s two parallel rankings measure different aspects of brand performance. Its luxury hotel brand value ranking places Hilton at the top with a brand value of US$19.2 billion, up 28% year-on-year. Hyatt and Marriott follow in second and third positions with brand values of US$7.5 billion and US$4.6 billion, respectively.
